Once upon a time this girl ran a half marathon, and then she was crazy enough to run another. Lake Murray was my go to training grounds. My glory days of running may be over after a knee injury, but I can still appreciate a good 6 mile walk around Lake Murray in east San Diego.
Lake Murray offers scenic views of the Murray Reservoir and is a very popular destination for San Diego residents looking to bike, jog, walk, or rollerblade on a paved road. Visitors can walk on the paved pathway only as far as the dam gate (approximately 3.2 miles) then must turn around, making it a 6.4-mile round trip.
The trail is relatively flat with some small inclines, but nothing too strenuous, making it enjoyable for people of all different fitness levels. Because the path is paved, it is also easy on the feet allowing for the use of regular walking shoes on the smooth terrain. Port O Potties are scattered all along the trail which makes this hike/stroll a very kid friendly option.
Aside from gorgeous views of the Lake and nature surrounding it, it is easy to get distracted by the sheer number of activities taking place on and around the lake on any given day. Lake Murray is open for fishing, float tubes, and wading. You will often see fishers reeling in Florida-strain largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie, and trout.
In addition to water activities you will likely also spot people enjoying the 64 picnic tables and 10 barbecues available around the lake. The area is also very dog friendly and you will likely see many running or walking with their owners.
The City of San Diego took over operation of the Murray Reservoir in 1950 – originally owned by the Helix Irrigation District. Murray Reservoir is located within the boundary of the City’s Mission Trails Regional Park which offers an abundance of desirable hiking trails and rock climbing spots. The reservoir is expansive – when it’s full, the reservoir has 171.1 surface acres, a maximum water depth of 95 feet, and 3.2 shoreline miles. Talk about a large body of water!
Tip 1: The gates close at 8, so plan accordingly especially during those summer nights where it is easy to lose track of time with the sun setting late.
Tip 2: The best times to hike this trail are early morning or late afternoon as it gets crowded and can get warm during summer months.
Tip 3: You can even get Dippin’ Dots here at a small concession stand! A Starbucks is also situated very close by if you’d like to get a morning coffee before your stroll.
Tip 4: If you don’t like dogs this hike probably isn’t for you as this is a popular dog trail.
Tip 5: There are no water fountains on the trail around the lake – bring your own and plenty of it!
Tip 6: Stick around after your hike to partake in some fishing, water activities, or pack your own picnic to enjoy on one of the picnic tables.
