The Lake Miramar Loop Trail is an ideal weekend or after-work destination. Tucked away in the suburban utopia of the Scripps Ranch community, Lake Miramar is a family-friendly trail that can be enjoyed by all fitness levels and ages. At 5 miles in length, this trail offers the option to walk, bike, or run along a paved trail and/or hike along a dirt path that hugs Lake Miramar. With ample parking, a concession stand open on weekends, a playground,
48 picnic benches
, and plenty of facilities, this destination is also child-friendly.
The Lake Miramar Loop trail picks up off Scripps Lake Drive near I-15. After finding parking in the expansive lot, follow the paved trail above the parking lot towards the picturesque lake.
The trail in its entirety loops around to complete 5 miles, however if you’re looking for something shorter you can also skip the loop and opt for an out-and-back walk instead. With mile markers every quarter-mile, it is easy to keep track of your distance.
Along the way, you’ll spot several clearly marked viewpoints, perfect for taking a breather and admiring the scenery before you. At 1.25-miles, Carroll Cove will be one of these viewpoints you may wish to check out. This stopping point is also a favorite for fishermen. Clairemont Point is also another fishermen favorite, with a fishing dock accessible at this stop.
Another notable stopping point comes about halfway through your hike. A large sign will greet you and will read Natalie Park. Natalie Park is the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch with its lines of tables, ample amount of grills, playground for children, and plenty of shade from the trees above. Natalie Trail is also accessible here, another dirt trail that takes hikers above the lake.
At approximately 4.25-miles, the loop continues with a walk across a fenced dam. If you have been taking the lower dirt trails that rim the lake, you’ll need to walk up at this point to cross the dam. After crossing the dam your hike will conclude with scenic views of La Jolla and Sorrento Valley in the distance. A large, barren tree solicits a good photo opportunity here.
The loop will close at the beginning of the parking lot but not without one last spectacular view of the lake. Our furry friend Tucker enjoyed taking in the view here. From here, make your way back to where you parked your vehicle.
