I typically find myself driving long distances to explore San Diego’s best trails. East Shepherd Canyon is a rare and welcome exception. This convenient, easily-accessible hike is in middle of the suburbs of Tierrasanta. Its central location is ideal for hikers looking to get in something quick yet enjoyable.
Despite being located in a relatively affluent area of San Diego, the East Shepherd Canyon Trail has a bit of history behind it. During WWII this trail once passed through a Marine Corps training camp. This is made evident with a sign at the trailhead warning hikers they may encounter unexploded shells in the area. These shells are not dangerous and have been examined by the military. Seventy years later, this trail has become a popular destination for local hikers and runners.
The East Shepherd Canyon Trail picks up in the middle of a neighborhood in Tierrasanta, along Remora St. To reach the trailhead, walk along the sidewalk on Remora St. toward a large wooden sign that reads “East Shepherd Canyon”. Once you reach the sign, walk downhill into the canyon, passing beneath staggering eucalyptus and willow trees. You’ll cross several wooden footbridges, helping you avoid the shallow stream of water flowing below.
About a quarter-mile into the hike you’ll cross a larger, longer bridge. Continue along the trail, passing through a small clearing. After the recent rainfall, this area was abundantly green and had a small bench to admire the views.
Continue just a bit farther and you’ll reach a junction. To the left, you can continue on the main trail. To the right, you can follow a short, narrow spur trail beneath a canopy of trees. Both paths will rejoin after a short distance.
Just after the trail rejoins, you’ll reach Dishwasher Pond, marked by a large wooden sign. This is the half-way point for reaching the turnaround point on this trail. Another sign nearby will indicate this, showing you have 0.6 miles until you reach the halfway point.
Continue following the fairly straightforward trail until you reach a series of paths, all leading different directions. Veer to the trail on the right when you reach this junction, about 1.1 miles in. You’ll quickly begin to climb uphill. All of your elevation will be gained here, approximately 200 feet in a short distance.
You’ll reach the turn back point when you get to Via Valarta, marked by another sign for East Shepherd Canyon. Turn around here and retrace your steps back to Remora St. Alternately, you can also follow the streets through the residential neighborhood to return back to your car.
