Since her remarks seemed definitive and I believe even used the word eminent, the suggestion was she was in the know as opposed to forecasting. Do you know? Still foot access from Jacumba side? Did any work ever actually commence? Thanks.

I’m not sure it’s her responsibility to keep updated information posted. Everything she wrote was valid for when I went the year, and when she went in July 2015. I too heard stories about repairs and use of the tracks coming up, but that’s pretty hard to verify. What are you going to do, call the railroad?

I find nothing that affirms this ever started. Misinformation? Informed update requested. Thanks

The San Diego times posted an article about the renovation back in June and I have honestly not been to Carrizo Gorge since I heard of the news so I am unsure if MTS has actually started construction on the tracks or not. Projects like this often get delayed so I wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t started yet, but to be safe you may want to attempt the legal route which can be found in Afoot and Afield by Jerry Schad. This route is more strenuous but shorter than the 12-mile round trip journey you’d need to take walking along the rails. Here is an article that describes the plans to restore the railroad: http://timesofsandiego.com/business/2016/06/09/mts-cheers-deal-to-rebuild-desert-line-railway-for-tijuana-link/.

I’ve been so interested to hike this Goat canyon trestle for the last two years. This weekend finally, I can spare some time to drive from LA to do this.
You wrote that the plan to rebuild the railway is imminent beginning Summer 2016, is it possible to let me know where you got the information from.
I want to make sure that I can still do this hike through the rails (12 miles RT) after my long drive from LA.
ps: I saw people still posting their pictures on the rails a couple weeks ago.
Thanks!

We are going to head back out there this fall and ride the tracks the whole way. We entered from the 8 near Jacuma shell station. And there IS a nudist camp right there off the 8 on the side we entered from. There’s more train cars over that way too on a siding. We met a couple naked dudes out for a hike when we there haha.

Climbing down to check out the cars was a little nerve wracking but probably doesn’t compare to riding over the trestles on dirt bikes! I commend your bravery. 😉
