Whether you’re debating taking your first hike (which I highly recommend!) or you’re a seasoned hiker it’s always important to be prepared before you embark on a hiking adventure. Being prepared means knowing what exactly is essential. Having taken a few dozen hikes myself, I’ve compiled a list of hiking essentials intended to be beneficial for any level hiker.
So before you jump in your car to hike that beautiful trail you’ve been dying to visit, make sure you’ve packed the following hiking must haves:
- First Aid Kit – This may sound trite, but having a first aid kit handy is always a good idea, especially when physical activity is involved. It is common to rub against rocks and brush when hiking or you may even trip and fall. Having antiseptic and a band aid on hand can make all the difference to avoid infection.
-
Comfortable/Quality Hiking Boots
– I had a hard time deciding whether hiking boots should be listed as my number one on my hiking essentials list, so think of this as a very close second. Having a pair of hiking boots that are both comfortable and high quality is crucial. Not only do hiking boots provide great traction for rugged terrains, but they also can help by keeping your feet dry, pain-free, and protected. I’d recommend visiting your local REI or Dick’s Sporting Goods to pick up a good pair. They do run a little costly but luckily they will also last you awhile – I’ve had my current pair for five years now!
-
Hiking Backpack
– A hiking backpack is designed to stay light, breathable, waterproof and comfortable, even when they’re fully loaded. I would strongly recommend a
Camelbak
backpack as it will also offer you a nozzle for easily accessible hydration and clever compartments to keep all your hiking gear organized and easy to grab. This is also a great place to store your aforementioned first aid kit.
- Water – Another important hiking essential is water, and plenty of it. Hiking can be strenuous, and properly refueling your body is crucial to avoid dehydration.
-
Protein Bars
– Protein-packed bars are the perfect hiking accessory when you need a quick meal that will leave you full. I always grab a
Perfect Bar
or
Quest Bar
along with a piece of fruit when preparing for a hike
.
